What is low-level laser therapy?

1. Low-level laser therapy is a healing modality that works by stimulating cellular growth and creating positive biological effects to the applied area. Amplified and synchronized light (laser beam) at a certain wavelength triggers a cellular and biochemical process in humans, including ATP production, collagen production and increased blood flow to the affected area. The penetration of living tissue has been proven to be most effective at this 600-1000 nanometer range (the higher the wavelength of a laser, the deeper the penetration into the tissue). Products such as the Starlite® operate at wavelengths of 655 nanometers, making it an excellent laser for superficial stimulation (skin) and regeneration without effecting deeper tissue.

What separates laser light from other light?

2. Laser light is coherent, monochrome light that oscillates in harmony. This harmonization is what makes laser light so bright. Unlike sunlight which covers a broad spectrum of wavelengths that are both visible and invisible, laser light contains a single wavelength. In the case of the Starlite®, red spectrum light energy is emitted at 655 nanometers.

How are low-level lasers different than surgical lasers?

3. The main use of low-level laser therapy is biostimulation, while surgical lasers are meant for surgical incisions. The power output of low-level lasers is also considerably lower (1mW-500mW) than surgical lasers (3,000mW-10,000mW). No discomfort or side effects can be attributed to low-level laser therapy, while surgical lasers cut through tissue and may leave scars.

What can low-level laser therapy be used for?

4. Lasers have found much involvement in medicine since the first laser was developed in the 1960's. Some of the applications include anti-aging, hair growth (allopecia), hair removal, skin conditions, cuts, bruises, soft tissue damage, sports injuries, arthritic conditions, neuralgia, musculoskeletal disorders, smoking cessation, tattoo removal, and more.

How does low-level laser light affect the body?

5. Low-level laser light can affect the body in different ways depending on wavelength and power output. There are four distinct effects associated with low level laser therapy:

1. Growth factor response within cells and tissues due to increased ATP and protein synthesis
2. Pain relief as a result of increased endorphin and serotonin release
3. Increased lymphatic activity and strengthening of immune system response
4. Stimulation of acupuncture point

Other biological and cellular responses include collagen production, increased circulation to affected areas, and absorption of vital nutrients.
